Bath bombs #makeyourownmonday

For ages I have wanted to try making my own bath bombs – who doesn’t love a bit of a science experiment in the bathroom??

Our kids absolutely love bath time, especially when they’ve got something new or interesting to do or play with (various Lush products as presents over the last few years!). However, shop bought products can be rather expensive. Cue let’s try find a recipe to do at home.

Ingredients

  • 100g bicarbonate of soda
  • 50g citric acid
  • 25g cornflour
  • 2 tablespoon oil (sunflower, coconut, olive)
  • 1/4 teaspoon essential oil (orange, lavender, chamomile)
  • few drops liquid food colouring

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl (large and small)
  • Whisk
  • Plastic moulds (such as silicone cupcake cases, ice cube trays, or biscuit cutters placed onto a tray)
  • Measuring scales
  • Tablespoon
  • Teaspoon
  • Wooden spoon

Method

Put bicarb, citric acid and cornflour in a large bowl. Mix.

Pour base oil, essential oil, and food colouring in a small bowl. Mix well.

Slowly add oil mixture to dry mixture, whisking continuously. When all oil is added, add a few tiny drops of water and whisk again.

The mixture should slightly clump together when pressed in your hand and keep its shape.

Press mixture into moulds firmly, smoothing out the top with the back of a teaspoon.

Leave your bath bomb to dry for 6-8 hours (or overnight) then carefully remove them.

Remember to take time to savour the fizzing sound when you drop them into the bath!
