Dishwasher tablets #makeyourownmonday

So I have to start this post by admitting that we don’t actually own a dishwasher. I have seen the argument that dishwashers are more eco friendly because they use less water, but we just don’t have room for one in our kitchen. Many of you will, though, so this may be of some interest!

Lockdown restrictions had lifted enough for us to go visit my parents at the end of July, so I decided the time had come to try out making some dishwasher tablets and use them with their permission.

My friend has made these regularly for the last two years and swears by them, so we’ve nothing to lose by giving them a shot!

Ingredients **

  • 1 cup bicarbonate of soda
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 1 tablespoon washing up liquid

Equipment

  • Bowl
  • Table Spoon
  • Cup measure
  • Ice cube tray(s)

Method

Mix bicarb and citric acid.

Add washing up liquid and mix again.

Wait 15 minutes. (We enjoyed the fluffiness of this sensory mixture!)

Put in ice cube trays of similar size to your dishwasher tablet slot.

Leave for 24 hours at room temperature.

Use as you would shop bought tablets. Rejoice in being thrifty and eco friendly at the same time.

**To be more eco friendly buy your ingredients in bulk. I have a HUGE bag of bicarbonate of soda at home. Washing up liquid, if you use it, can also be bought in bulk online very easily. If you’re lucky, you may have a bulk refill shop in town where you can refill your washing up liquid. Our local health food shop refills Ecover washing up liquid and laundry liquid.

Note

My friend found that she needs to use rinse aid in her dishwasher with these homemade tablets. She trialled vinegar as a rinse aid but found that she had to resort to shop bought in the end. However, this is her experience only, yours and your dishwasher may be different!
