Liquid soap #makeyourownmonday
During the lockdown in Scotland, I was unable to buy my favourite loose soap. I was faced with a dilemma. To buy liquid soap or not to buy liquid soap??
When I got to the supermarket, they only had one choice: very strong smelling bar soap in cardboard boxes wrapped in plastic. Never mind a run on the banks, it was the time of the run on soaps!
When I got home with the bar soap, my husband said he couldn’t stand the smell! The soap was relegated to our kids making super soapy water runs in the back garden. (Back to square one. Try find a shop with liquid pump soap for sale!)
Even after lots of playtime, we were still left with a couple of bars of the strong smelling soap. My brother-in-law used some bar soap to make liquid, so I was inspired to do the same to try see if the smell was less intense when diluted with water!

Turns out, making your own liquid soap is SUPER cheap! You can buy a pack of soap which each bar working out as 20p per bar. When diluted, one bar of soap makes almost 2 litres of liquid soap! You definitely can’t buy that much liquid soap for that price.

Enlist the help of a child to help grate the soap!
Admire your efforts, then pop into the bowl!
Add 1 litre boiling water, then whisk. If it seems really thick, add up to another half litre. It will thicken during the ‘make’.
Let the mixture sit for 12 hours. If you enlisted the help of a five year old, attempt to make sure they don’t keep playing in the mixture and splashing it round the kitchen (!)
Whizz the mixture up with a blender.
Take the jug you set out. Or a different one because you realise it’s got a better spout for such purposes 🙂
Pour into pre-loved plastic bottles.
Admire your stash and take a moment to marvel in how simple the process was and how much money you’ve saved!
Let me know if you do this and how you get on. We may have slightly over done the water (remember, I had a 5 year old helping…!). It just means we’re allowed two pumps not one when we wash our hands!
